About

On the "better" side of 40, I have navigated a few phases of life more or less successfully. I moved out of my parents' home in Wisconsin, graduated college, built a vigorous professional life as an educator and administrator, married the love of my life, relocated to the East Coast, and raised two amazing daughters with a few part-time stints and plenty of volunteer work and service appointments sprinkled in. Living in a series of college towns with my professor husband continues to enrich my days in innumerable ways and offers me the opportunity to engage in a lifetime of learning.

Now, I am preparing to enter a new phase of life, the one where my children will be heading out on their own soon, and I am fortunate to have the freedom to build a second professional career around latent, creative passions that I have cultivated over a lifetime. I want to be proactive as I prepare for what lies ahead, taking hold of the moment even as I release and appreciate the years now passed. As my family life progresses along its natural trajectory and I personally navigate these changes, I hope to evolve creatively yet stay true to my family and all I value most.

My earliest memories include the creation of the written word. I have practiced the craft of writing ever since, including blogging on A Measured Word and Gatherings and the Culpable Cook which have seen several incarnations over the years. Now, I find little gives me as much joy as writing, particularly shaping my thoughts cohesively, concisely, and completely around a single word and the events of an ordinary day with images, quotes, and poetry thrown in for added color on A Measured Word. I am a humble purveyor of words, selling nothing more than my thoughts and a bit of inspiration from midlife in an academic town. Follow my journey, if my posts resonate with you.
